Backlit Keypads & LED Backlighting

Backlit keypads — legends you can read in any light

LED backlighting built into membrane and silicone keypads, with light guides and edge-lit overlays for uniform brightness across every key. Single-color, multi-color or RGB — tuned for low-light medical rooms, dark cockpits and 24/7 industrial floors.

  • Uniform illumination with edge-lit or light-guide designs
  • White, blue, red, green, amber or RGB options
  • Thin construction — adds as little as 0.3 mm
  • LED life of 50,000–100,000 hours

How keypad backlighting works

Backlighting spreads light from small, efficient LEDs across the whole keypad, so legends glow evenly without hotspots. Three common approaches cover almost every design.

Light-guide backlighting

A thin printed or etched light guide sits behind the circuit layer. LEDs fire into the guide's edge; micro-structures re-direct the light upward through translucent legend windows. This is the most uniform method and adds the least thickness.

Edge-lit overlays

LEDs mounted inside the overlay's perimeter light the film edge-on. Ideal for slim panels where the overlay itself doubles as the light guide.

Direct SMD backlighting

Small SMD LEDs placed directly under translucent key areas. Simple and bright — best for keypads with larger, separated keys.

What makes it uniform

  • Light guide thickness and microstructure tuned per design
  • Translucent ink windows with controlled opacity
  • Diffuser layers to eliminate LED hotspots

Customization options

Color

White, blue, red, green, amber or custom wavelengths — including RGB zones.

Brightness & dimming

Fixed, PWM-dimmable or multi-step brightness, tuned to your ambient environment.

Legend windows

Translucent icons, text or full-key illumination with controlled light bleed.

LED interface

Series/parallel wiring, resistor options, constant-current drivers or your PCB integration.

Smart backlight

Ambient-light sensing, auto-dimming or wake-on-touch logic where your firmware supports it.

Sealed lighting

Backlight fully encapsulated in the switch stack for IP65–IP67 washdown products.

Backlighting FAQ

With a light guide, as little as 0.3–0.6 mm. Direct SMD backlighting can sit in the existing stack. We'll tell you the exact stack-up height after reviewing your drawing.
Yes. Multi-color zones, RGB keys and even individually addressable groups are possible. We'll route LED groups to match your desired lighting logic.
No. LEDs are low-voltage components with long life, and in sealed builds the backlight is encapsulated inside the switch stack, so IP ratings and cycle life are unaffected.
