Membrane Switches

Custom membrane switches, engineered to your exact spec

Low-profile, fully sealed switches built from precision-printed circuit layers. We design, prototype and volume-produce tactile and non-tactile membrane switches for medical, industrial and consumer products — with free DFM review and working samples in 10–15 days.

  • Tactile or non-tactile response with custom actuation force
  • Sealed construction rated IP65–IP67 against dust and washdown
  • LED backlighting, EMI shielding and ESD protection options
  • Circuit tails with FPC, ZIF, pin or wire connectors

What is a membrane switch?

A membrane switch is a momentary-contact switch built from thin, flexible layers: a printed graphic overlay, silver-ink or copper circuits, and a spacer that keeps the contacts apart until pressed.

How it works

Pressing the overlay flexes the top circuit through the spacer opening until it touches the bottom circuit, closing the switch. Release the key and the flexible film springs back, opening the circuit. A single tail routes every key to your PCB — no individual wiring, no exposed contacts.

Why engineers choose it

  • Ultra-low profile — typically under 1.5 mm with backing
  • Fully sealed against dust, liquids and cleaning chemicals
  • Graphics, legends and icons printed directly on the switch
  • Cost-effective at volume — one part replaces dozens of discrete parts

Construction layers

Every switch is a stack of precisely aligned layers, each selected for your environment:

  • Graphic overlay — printed PET/PC with hard coat, textures and windows
  • Top circuit — silver-ink or copper traces with contacts
  • Spacer — adhesive layer with openings for dome travel and venting
  • Bottom circuit — switch contacts and routing traces
  • Rigid backing — PET, FR4, aluminum or stainless steel for mounting
  • Tail & connector — FPC, ZIF, pin or box header to your PCB

Construction — exploded view

A standard five-layer construction, fully customizable: add domes for tactile feel, LEDs for backlighting, shielding for EMC, or a rigid backing plate for drop-in mounting.

Standard build

  • Graphic overlay — UV-resistant printing, hard coat 2H+, matte or gloss finish
  • Circuit layers — silver-ink printed on PET, or copper on flex for lower resistance
  • Spacer — die-cut openings sized for travel, snap ratio and venting
  • Tactile dome options — metal snap domes (crisp click) or polyester embossed domes (soft feel)

Customization options

Nearly every parameter is configurable. Pick from the list below — or send a drawing and we'll propose the best combination.

Shape & size

Any outline — circles, cutouts, complex curves — from 10 mm keys to full-panel layouts.

Tactile feedback

Metal snap domes for a crisp click, or polyester embossed domes for a soft feel.

Printing & finish

Screen or UV printing, matte/gloss textures, selective gloss, embossing and anti-glare.

Backlighting

LED edge-lit or light-guide backlighting with uniform brightness and long life.

EMI/ESD shielding

Silver-ink or copper shielding layers with grounding tails for noisy environments.

Connectors

FPC tail, ZIF, pin header, box header or wire lead — matching your PCB interface.

Adhesives

3M-class adhesives tuned for metal, painted, powder-coated or plastic enclosures.

Backer plates

PET, FR4, aluminum or stainless backing for stiffness, mounting and grounding.

Membrane switch FAQ

Prototypes start from a single unit. First production orders typically start around 100–500 pieces depending on construction and tooling, and we keep your tooling on file for low-cost reorders.
Yes. Send the physical sample and your target price. We reverse-engineer materials, tolerances and electrical specs, quote against them, and most match-and-improve projects reach sampling within two weeks.
10–15 working days after design approval, shipped by express courier. Repeat projects with approved tooling often sample in under a week.
